Q. What type of filter should I buy?

A. There are three common types of filters; sand, D.E. (diatomaceous earth, and cartridge. D.E. Filters do the best job of keeping your water clean. Cartridge filters do an excellent job for water clarity and need less maintenance. Sand filters do a good job and are inexpensive.

Q. How often should I change the sand in my filter?

A. Sand should be changed every 5 – 7 years depending on the use of the swimming pool.

Q. How do salt chlorinators work?

A. Salt chlorinators use common table salt to produce all the chlorine a pool needs, safely, and automatically. They work by putting an electric charge into the salt that produces the chlorine in your pool. No more handling chlorine. When your pool needs to be shocked; just press a button and the salt chlorinator generates more chlorine for your pool. The salt is at such a low level it is less than the salt of a tear drop.

Q. What kind of salt should I use in my salt chlorinator?

A. It is important to use only sodium chloride (NaCl) that is greater than 99% pure. This is common food quality or water softener salt and is usually labelled “Solar Salt“. Do not use rock salt, salt with yellow prussiate of soda, salt with anti-caking additives, or iodized salt.

Q. If I have a salt chlorinator, do I need an inline zinc anode?

A. Yes, most definitely, this item helps prevent staining on your pool surface. They also help prevent corrosion inside your heater. They are easy to install by a trained technician.

Q. Do I need weekly service?

A. If you do not have any spare time to take care of your pool or if all you want to be concerned with is when to swim, then yes. We offer several options for us to take care of your pool for you. Call us and we will discuss your options. We can customize a plan to meet your needs.

Q. Do I need a heater?

A. A heater is an ideal way to add more time to the swimming pool season. Not only do we install the heater for you, but we can install a natural gas line as well. There are other options if you are not a natural gas customer such as heat pumps to heat your pool.

Q. Are your technicians certified?

A. Yes! Our technicians attend manufacturers training seminars on a regular basis. All of our technicians carry a “Certified Pool Operator” certificate. We are members of the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) and our technicians annually attend APSP classes to retain their certifications and learn new trends in the swimming pool industry.

Q. Why does my pump just hum?

A. Your impeller may have seized. Sometimes debris might get caught in the impeller. You can contact us to make any needed repair or you may try to unstop it yourself. If you attempt it yourself, make sure the equipment is turned off and see if you can turn the impeller free. If that does not work, your motor may be locked up and need to be replaced. Call us for a free quotation to replace your motor. In many cases it is less expensive to repair your pump than replace it.

Q. Are you insured?

A. All of our employees are insured with full coverage of worker’s compensation insurance and liability insurance. As a homeowner, it is very important to mak esure the company servicing your pool is insured.

Q. What is the Virginia Greame Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act?

A. On December 19, 2007, President Bush signed into law the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act. This federal act establishes a swimming pool and spa drain cover standard to prevent suction entrapment hazards. Currently this act only applies to commercial swimming pools and hot tubs as well as pools now being constructed.

Q. What is entrapment?

A. Entrapment occurs when a swimmer is trapped by the suction created by water rushing out of the drain at the bottom of the pool or in a skimmer. In come cases, swimmers have drowned or have had serious injuries to various body parts. Entrapment in all swimming pools and hot tubs old and new can be prevented by adding compliant main drain covers and safety vacuum relief valves.
